The Gift of Sanctification.
God has placed it on my heart to begin bringing to your minds what it means to strive for holiness.
Hebrews 12:14 says, "Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord."
— Hebrews 12:14
I understand from this verse that anyone who does not lead a life dedicated to God will not be able to see the Lord.
We are setting out to pursue holiness during this year of sanctification (this is my resolution for the year 2027).
God's holiness is a fundamental aspect of His character.
God desires and even commands that His people pursue holiness (Leviticus 11:44).
Adopting a lifestyle that reflects God's holiness is so important that the writer of Hebrews urged Christians to pursue it; he calls us to live a holy life.
Brothers and sisters, we must realize that without Christ, we lack the capacity to achieve perfect holiness.
We are complete only in Christ.
Yet, as believers washed and chosen by the blood of Christ, we can strive and strive repeatedly with the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us; we will surely gain the victory.
Striving is the natural impulse to press on and walk toward holiness.
God sees our hearts and knows where we are inclined whether toward Him or toward the values of this world.
In the Sermon on the Mount
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God"
— Matthew 5:8
Those who desire to live in close communion with the Lord and see Him face to face must turn away from selfish and ungodly interests.
They must seek "first the kingdom of God and His righteousness"
— Matthew 6:33
We know that holiness is impossible without Christ, yet we believers are called to be like God in His holiness; God chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish before Him in love. (Ephesians 1:4)
The apostle Peter instructed believers
The apostle Peter instructed believers to:
"live as obedient children of God. Do not go back to your old way of living to satisfy your own desires. You used to do so out of ignorance, but now be holy in everything you do, just as God, who chose you, is holy. For the Scriptures say: 'Be holy, because I am holy’
— 1 Peter 1:14-16
Without a lifelong effort toward personal holiness, no one will see the Lord.
For God has not called us to impurity but to sanctification.
For God has not called us to impurity but to sanctification.
The statement that without holiness no one will see the Lord reflects the author's anticipation of seeing Christ upon His return (see 1 John 3:2).
If our primary goal is to be like Christ and to see Him when He returns, our practical daily pursuit must be directed toward total purity of thought and lifestyle.
We are the temple of the living God
We are the temple of the living God (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).
Considering this revelation, the apostle Paul exhorted:
"Dear friends, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that might defile our body or spirit. And let us strive for complete holiness because we fear God"
— 2 Corinthians 7:1
Paul told Timothy:
"So, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be an instrument for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, and prepared for every good work"
— 2 Timothy 2:21
without holiness no one will see the Lord
We find an idea parallel to "without holiness no one will see the Lord" in these words of Paul:
"For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure, or greedy person such a person is an idolater has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God"
— Ephesians 5:5
Regarding the future and glorious New Jerusalem, the apostle John said:
"Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life"
— Revelation 21:27
as the Lord’s redeemed people
It is vital to understand and know that, as the Lord’s redeemed people, we are saved through the finished work of Christ the offering of His body on the cross (Hebrews 10:10, 14; Ephesians 1:4; 1 Corinthians 1:2).
We have been saved by Jesus for a:
"holy calling not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time"
— 2 Timothy 1:9
"He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy." He washed us, taking away our sins, and gave us new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit"
— Titus 3:5
Sanctification is based on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ
Sanctification is based on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and on the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us (Colossians 1:22; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; 2 Thessalonians 2:13; John 3:5-8; 1 Corinthians 6:11).
Motivated by the knowledge that without holiness no one will see the Lord, we continue to strive our utmost for Christ, struggling to clothe ourselves in our:
"new nature, created to be like God, who is truly righteous and holy"
— Ephesians 4:24
From this day forward, I correct my walk, knowing that—with the help of the Holy Spirit, who is transforming and renewing my heart, I will be ready, Lord, for that great day when the saints go marching in.
Amen."
Amen.
